A LITTLE ABOUT ME

I've spent most of my life teaching, recording, mixing and performing with artists and bands all across the continent.

When I was a wee lad I studied percussion and world music at St. Olaf College, where I played drums in the college's nationally renowned jazz ensemble. After graduating I went on to attain a Music Studies Professional certificate from Berklee School of Music, with a concentration in mixing and production.

These days I perform in the band Step Rockets, produce, mix, and record artists at Quincy Street Studio, teach drums and production, and write original music for the NBC/Universal network.

I've gigged all around North America, drumming for rock, funk, pop and jazz artists. I play drum set, percussion, and samplers in addition to programming tracks and lighting via Ableton Live.

The recording studio is my second home and I’d be happy to lay down drums for your next song. I can travel to studio sessions within the Twin Cities metro area or cut drums out of Quincy Street Studio.

FAQs

Where do you teach?

I teach out of Quincy Street Studio in NE Minneapolis.  The studio is equipped with two drum sets, a huge variety of percussion instruments, and PA speakers. I will also drive to students for in-home lessons when my schedule permits.

Are there any restrictions?

I strongly recommend that the student be 5 years or older.  I'm also happy to make appropriate accommodations for any students with special needs.

Do you offer an introductory lesson?

Yes!  I think it's a great idea to meet and make sure we're a good fit before committing to a block of lessons.  In our first lesson we can discuss musical goals and I'll answer any questions you may have about studying with me.

REVIEWS

I played drums in a school band and haven’t played in a few years. I approached John about getting back into the art even though I was a little rusty. Previously I have taken lessons with people who were skilled gigging drummers but not the best educators. John is a great combination of professional musician and a skilled educator, as shown through his patience and ability to explain techniques and skills. I highly recommend John as a teacher for any level, because he has been so wonderful in getting me back on my musical feet!
